Vishu

VishuIntroduction
The festival of Vishu is celebrated with joy and mirth on the first day of Malayalese month of Medam. This corresponds to the month of April-May according to Gregorian calendar. The occasion holds a lot of significance for Hindus as Vishu marks the Astronomical New Year Day. The traditional people of Kerala practice a lot of colorful rituals and customs on Vishu. Most of these traditions are based on a belief that Vishu must be celebrated well as the good things of the first day of the New Year will continue for the rest of the year too.

Rituals and Traditions

Most important ritual of the day is called 'Kani Kanal', the literal translation of this is 'first sight'. In Kani Kanal there is a prescribed list of items, which a person must see first thing on a Vishu morning to bring good luck. This include a cadjan leaf book, gold ornaments, fresh white cloth, a measure of rice or paddy, flowers of the Konna tree (Cussia fistula), halved jack fruits, halved coconuts and yellow cucumber. All these things are kept in a big pot and behind this pot is kept the bell metal mirror and a garlanded deity of Lord Krishna. Two standing oil lamps are also placed before the deity. Preparations of Kani are done a night before by the lady of the house. Master of the house is the first person to Kani and then the other family members follow. Children are brought blind folded from their rooms to see Kani Kanal, the first thing in the morning. Vishu Kani is later distributed amongst the poor and needy people. Reason behind this ritual is the strong belief of the people that the fortune of the rest of the year depends on the first object they see on the Vishu day. There is also a tradition to give small amounts of cash to children of the family. This tradition is called Vishu Kaineetam. People believe that this custom will ensure prosperity for their children in future. A large number of people prefer to see Vishu Kani in temples. A huge rush of devotees can be seen in the temples of Guruvayur, Ambalapuzha and Sabarimala where special prayers are organised to mark the day. People stay overnight in the courtyards of these temples a night before Vishu so that they see Kani, first thing on Vishu in the temple. Devotees close their eyes and set their eyes on Kani and deity so that when the doors to the deity opens at 2:30 am, the first thing they see is Kani.

Celebrations
A grand sadya (feast) is prepared by women of the house and the whole family sits together at lunch to relish it. Dishes are usually prepared from jackfruits, mangoes, pumpkins, and gourds besides other vegetables and fruits, which are in plenty at that time of the season. People also wear kodi vastram (new clothes) on this day. Patassu (fire crackers) are burst in the midst of dancing and merry to mark the day. A group of young men and women dress up as 'chozhi' , wearing a skirt of dried banana leaves and masks on their faces and go from house to house in the village dancing and collecting small amounts of money. On Vishu, these entertainers get good rewards for their performances. The money is spent on the Vishuwela (the New Year Fair).

Vishu is the first day in the first Malayalam month of Medam (March – April). The traditional rituals followed in the festival is believed to usher in another year of prosperity for the Keralites. The Malayalees make elaborate preparations for this day to ensure that the year ahead will be a fruitful one by following the custom of seeing the Vishukani (auspicious sight) early in the morning. This festival shares the spirit that can be observed in all the festivals of spring – the spirit of hope and expectations that a new dawn brings with it.The people of kerala celebrate this festival in a traditional manner. They follow the custom of viewing the Vishukani( the lucky sight) in the morning of the festival. The vishukani is later taken and distributed among the poor people.

The people buy new clothes (kodi vastram) for the occasion and the elders of the family distribute tokens of money to the children, servants and tenants. These tokens are called the vishukaineetam and are usually in form of coins. People carry on this custombelieving that in this way, their children will be blessed with prosperity in future.

The families then celebrate the day with joyous abandon by bursting fire crackers after the vishukani. While the men and the children engage in bursting crackers, the women start cooking a variety of delicacies for the day's lunch. The feast or the 'sadya' is prepared by the women of the household and the whole family sits down to enjoy the vishu lunch together. The dishes prepared from the vegetables and fruits that are abundant in the season like jackfruits, mangoes, pumkins, a variety of gourds, and coconuts.

The young people of the village go from house to house, dancing and collecting money. They usually do this in groups dressed up as the ' chozhi' with dried banana leaves tied around their waists and masks on their faces. On this day, the people give money to them willingly.

By the evening they have enough money to spend in the Vishuwela (the new year fair). The evenings are spent in these fairs where there is a lot of revelry, with music and various dance troupes.

The famous temples like Guruvayur, Sabarimala and Padmanaba Shetram are filled with devotees. Special pujas are held in these temples where the people go to worship and pray for a prosperous New Year. They also view the Vishukanis that are prepared in each of these temples.

blackjack was derived from an old french game called

Perhaps you have wondered how the name of the game "Blackjack" evolved. The name appears to have been born at a time when preferred odds were offered for a hand that contained a black Jack card (Jack of Clubs or Spades) together with an Ace of spades. Higher winnings were paid out when a black Jack card was used to create a winning blackjack hand. This was with the intention of attracting more players to the game. It did not take long for this benefit to be no longer necessary, and many casinos soon dropped this extra way of paying out to the players. However, the name of blackjack stuck.

The Popularity of Casino Blackjack - and Blackjack Online

most number of runs in test cricket

Most runs in one over in Test cricket

The most in a single day of Test cricket is 588, on the second day of the 1936 Old Trafford Test. England, 173 for 2 overnight, declared at 571 for 8, then India reached 190 for 0 by the close. The most by one side in a day is 509 (from 32 for 0 to 541 for 9), by Sri Lanka on the second day of their first Test against Bangladesh in Colombo in 2002.

Munaf Patel has been the pick of Indian bowlers in the ongoing St. Kitts Test taking three wickets out of the five to fall in West Indies’ innings including the prized scalp of Brian Lara. But he entered the record books for wrong reasons on day two as he was carted for six consecutive fours in one single over by Ramnaresh Sarwan. This provided only the fifth instance in Test cricket history of a batsman hitting six boundaries in one over.

most number of runs in test cricket

India's Sandeep Patil was the first batsman to perform this feat in Test cricket. Patil did so off the bowling of England’s Bob Willis at Manchester in 1982.One of the fours came off a no-ball (third ball of the over) with one ball not scored off.

There were just under 12 years between Les Jackson's first Test, against New Zealand at Old Trafford in 1949, and his second and last, against Australia at Headingley in 1961. In terms of time, though, the overall record gap is an amazing 22 years and 222 days, by John Traicos. He played three Tests for South Africa in 1969-70 - the last three before their exclusion from international cricket - and was still wheeling down his offspin when Zimbabwe gained Test status in 1992-93. Traicos, who was then 45, played in Zimbabwe's first four Tests (he took 5 for 86 in 50 overs in their first one, against India at Harare).

New Zealand's Craig McMillan became the first batsman to hit a boundary of every ball of an over when he hit five fours and a six off Pakistan’s Younis Khan at Hamilton in 2000-01.

West Indies Brian Lara emulated McMillan by hitting South African Robin Peterson for four fours and two sixes at Johannesburg in 2003-04. Another West Indian Chris Gayle scored six consecutive fours of English paceman Matthew Hoggard at the Oval in 2004.

The record gap between appearances for the same country is 17 years 316 days, by England's George Gunn - between 1911-12 and 1929-30, by which time he was 50. The Warwickshire legspinner Eric Hollies is the only other England player with a longer time gap between Tests than Jackson: he did not appear between 1934-35 and 1947, 12 years 81 days in all. In terms of matches missed between appearances, the record is 114, by England's Martin Bicknell, when he reappeared after a ten-year gap against South Africa in 2003. The previous record was 104, by Younis Ahmed of Pakistan between 1969-70 and 1986-87. Another England player, Derek Shackleton, missed 103 Tests between 1951-52 and 1963.

Sarwan, in fact, had the opportunity to have his name in a separate league of his own, but he missed it by failing to score off any runs of the seventh ball of Patel’s over, which was there as a gift as Patel had over-stepped while delivering the sixth ball of this dreadful over. Had he scored another boundary off this ball, Sarwan would have created a new world record of most number of runs and boundaries in one over.

New Ugadi pachadi recipe:

Ugadi is the New Year and is celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm across the state of Andhra Pradesh. The day is of great significance as it signifies a fresh start to all the ventures and endeavors.

The day derives its significance from Hindu Mythology and it is believed that Lord Brahma, creator of the Hindu Pantheon, started creation on this day. The festival comes after Holi, the festival of colors. It marks the onset of spring, the first season of the year, a season when everything is lush, green and verdant. Fresh green leaves replace wilted ones while flowers bloom in full glory. Spring signifies a fresh lease of life which is evident in Mother Nature as a fresh lease of life dawns on most of its creation.

Women use different flowers which bloom during this time to decorate their house. They also use sweet smelling Jasmine to braid their hair. On this day, people wear new clothes and many clean and white wash their houses to mark the beginning of a new year. This also symbolizes cleaning the house so that Goddess of wealth and prosperity blesses the house and its dwellers.

On Ugadi day, people wake up before the break of dawn and take a head bath. They decorate the entrance of their houses with fresh mango leaves. The significance of tying mango leaves relates to a legend. It is said that Kartik (or Subramanya or Kumara Swamy) and Ganesha, the two sons of Lord Siva and Parvathi were very fond of mangoes. As a result the people decorate their houses with mango leaves as an auspicious gesture.

Close to the heart on this day is mango as not only the recipe but also its leaves grace the entrances of people’s house. Several delicacies are prepared on this day and the one which could be said to be a ‘trademark ‘ for this festival is Ugadi Pachchidi. This is prepared out of new jaggery ( derived from the fresh produce of sugarcane ) raw mango pieces , neem flowers and new tamarind. This recipe reflects life as it has a mix of sweet and sour things, so the most opportune moment to taste life is on the New Year day!

Different types of sweets are also prepared on this day along with some special culinary delights which rejuvenates the taste buds to last for a long time! People visit their relatives and exchange greetings on this day. The day symbolizes a fresh, happy and auspicious start to any new venture or effort.

Mini Biography

Kourtney was born in Los Angeles, California to Robert Kardashian and Kris Jenner. She is the eldest of four children from Bob and Kris. After her parents divorce, she spent her time between her father's and mother's houses in Beverly Hills. Her mother married Bruce Jenner, 1976 Olympic Gold Metal Champion for the Decathlon and later had two children with him. After the O.J. Simpson murder trial propelled Kourtney's father, Bob, into the spotlight (he was a member of the "Dream Team" of lawyers defending the accused murderer in what journalists hail the "Trial of the Century."), her mother decided it would be safer to move her family to Hidden Hills, California.

Growing up in an affluent Los Angeles family, Kardashian received a car for her sixteenth birthday. Unlike her friends, however, Kardashian found herself cut off by her parents at age eighteen, as they wanted to instill a work ethic in their daughter. Kardashian befriended such socialites as Paris Hilton, Nicky Hilton, and Nicole Richie. Later on, these friends would also become some of her top clients when she founded the upscale Calabasas fashion boutique "Dash," along with her sisters, Kourtney Kardashian and Khloe. Prior to opening her own store, Kardashian sold some of her top designer duds on e-bay.

In early 2007, a sex tape hit the Internet starring Kardashian and boyfriend at the time, Ray J, little brother to Brandy Norwood. Although Kardashian admitted to the existence of the tape before it went public, she denied orchestrating the release of the tape for profit, claiming "I don’t need the money." Adult film company, Vivid Entertainment, purchased the tape from an unknown source for $1 million, and reportedly plans to release the tape on DVD before February 28, 2007, under the title Kim Kardashian Superstar. The tape has also been posted on Kimksuperstar.com, and can be seen for a fee.

Co-chairman of the company distributing the video has stated "We are comfortable that we have the legal right to distribute this video." Kardashian’s people seem to think otherwise, however.

When notified of Vivid Entertainment’s distribution of the video, a rep for Kardashian replied "Are you [bleep]ing me? Kim is going to die . . . are you sure? She will be taking legal action against anyone responsible for this. She was unaware of this and caught completely off-guard." Kardashian and Ray have long since split, and the rapper has since been romantically linked to Lil’ Kim and is currently dating Whitney Houston.

Kim has a lot going on as of late, due to the fact that E! has begun shooting season two of her family’s hit reality show.

She also snagged a gig with Bongo jeans as the spokeswoman for their new line of jeans. It’s rumored that her body was a little too voluptuous for Bongo, hence some photoshopping occurred in the new ads.

There are various versions about the incarnation of Goddess Durga. The most common one goes like this:
Once upon a time, a demon by the name of Mahishashur became very powerful because of a boon conferred upon him by God Shiva. As a result he invaded the Heavens and drove out all the gods residing there including their king, Lord Indra. All the resident gods and goddesses of Heaven visited the three main Powers of this Universe; Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar (another name for God Shiva) and lamented on their state of sorrow and the amount of torment put upon them by Mahishashura. Listening to this, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva were so enraged that the grief of the gods also transformed into immense anger over the deeds of Mahishashura. Out of this combined rage and anger of the 3 main gods and all other gods and godesses present there, developed an immense power and out came Goddess Durga as an incarnation of Shakti, the power behind everything in this Universe.
All the gods and goddesses, started praying to her to save them from their plight and angusih which they are suffering at the hands of Mahishashura. All of them started to give her various means of self defence (weapons and carrier) and out came Goddess Durga, fully prepared to face the might of Mahishashura.
Thus started one of the biggest fights between demons and gods, or evil and good, in the form of Mahishashura fighting Goddess Durga. As always, good prevails over the evil and Goddess Durga came out victorious in this fierce battle. She killed Mahishashura and reinstated the gods in their original abode in the heavens. She then told all the gods and goddesses to call her in their times of distress and she will respond immediately to alleviate their plights and misery.
Thus it is a common belief among the Hindus, that Goddess Durga, being the reincarnation of Shakti or power, is always worshipped during times of hardship, conflicts and confrontation. The Hindus pray to Goddess Durga or one of her many incarnations, to overcome any adverse situations in life and they believe that with her blessings they can cross any hurdles.

Mythological Background of Durgapuja - Akalbodhan

In the Hindu Epic Ramayana, one can find the earliest reference of Durga Puja i.e. worship of Goddess Durga by mankind. In Ramayana, Lord Rama (king of Ayodhya) went to "Lanka" along with his army of monkeys from "Kishkindhya" led by Hanuman. He went to Lanka to rescue his wife Sita who was abducted and imprisoned by Ravana, the king of demons residing in "Lanka".
Before embarking on the invasion of Lanka, Lord Rama started to worship Goddess Durga asking for her blessings during the ensuing battle against Ravana. During those days, it was believed that Goddess Durga has to be worshipped with one hundred "Neelkamal" (blue lotus flowers) but Lord Rama could arrange only ninety nine of them. Out of desperation and intense desire to please the goddess, Lord Rama decided to take out one of his blue colored eyes (resembling blue lotus) and offer to Goddess Durga. Impressed by his devotion, Goddess Durga appeared before him and blessed him for the ensuing battle.
This battle also turned out to be one of the epics between the evil and the good but finally Lord Rama came out victorious and emancipated Lanka from the clutches of the demon, Ravana. It is said that Ravana was killed in the "Sandhikhan" (junction) between Ashtami (eighth day after new moon) and Navami (ninth day after new moon) and he was cremated in Dashami (tenth day after new moon). He reinstated Bibhishan, Ravana's brother and a pious man, to the throne of Lanka and returned to Ayodhya along with his wife, Sita.
Lord Rama's worship of Goddess Durga took place during the autumn month of Ashwin (as per Bengali calender) instead of the normal period during the spring month of Chaitra (as per Bengali calender). Hence it is called "Akal Bodhan", Akal means unconventional time, Bodhan means worship. We, the Bengalis, also perform Akal Bodhan i.e. during the autumn months, as per Bengali calender to do our Durga Puja.

1/2 cup sweetened coconut flakes (normal grated coconut can also be added)
1/2 cup Grated jaggery

Prepare the dough like it's done for chapattis but a little loose. Keep it aside closed. The dal has to be cooked in pressure cooker and after removing the excess water out of the dal, it is blend in to paste in a mixer or by hand. Remember not to add water to the dal.
Prepare the pooran by mixing the mashed dal, coconut, jaggery and cardamom powder.
Now stuff the dough with pooran and gently roll it with rolling pin (like we do for aalu parathas) or pat it with hands if you are good at it. If patting with hands, spread some oil on your hands. Make it as thin as possible and make fry it on the tava in medium heat like we usually do for aalu parathas. Serve it hot!!
