Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 3 (IANS) The Kerala government will open a special police cell exclusively to deal with issues relating to the 1.8 million non-resident Keralites (NRKs) abroad.
"We expect Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to announce this at the two-day diaspora meet here starting Friday," Congress leader M.M. Hassan told IANS.
The cell was likely to be headed by an inspector general of police, said Hassan, who heads Roots-Norka, the body that looks after the welfare of NRKs and is organising the meeting.
On the agenda are discussion on voting rights to NRIs, for which Chandy has already submitted a draft to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and the attitude of national carrier Air-India towards NRKs, he added.
At the meeting, to be inaugurated by Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Jagdish Tytler, applications would be received for identity cards. All applicants would be given the card within two weeks.
Once the cards are issued, the Kerala government would issue an order asking all offices to give priority to NRKs.
About 300 organisations, mostly from the Middle East, have registered for the meet. An exhibition where government departments would showcase probable business opportunities would also take place, Hassan said.
