Another stadium in Kanpur soon

KANPUR: A good news is in the offing for sport lovers of Kanpur. With an amount of Rs 34 lakh, the Kanpur Nagar Nigam (KNN) is all prepared for the construction of a stadium in Kanpur south. The foundation stone of the ambitious project is likely to be laid in the Kidwai Nagar site number 1 area within a day or two.

Talking to newsmen, mayor, Ravindra Patni, said, "the size of the city and the presence of a few sport centres has prompted the urban body to take up the construction of a new stadium in the southern part of the city."

Patni pointed out that for the maintenance of parks, there was a sanctioned amount of Rs 1.14 crore with the KNN. Out of the total amount, work order of Rs 24 lakh has been approved and soon the maintenance of city parks would be started. In addition, plans were afoot for the construction of a prominent park in the southern part of the city.

"The park will be named after martyr Chandra Shekhar Azad," he said and added that there were plans to develop at least one major park in each of the 110 city wards under KNN.

He said that as Kanpur South lacked a cremation centre, plans in the regard were being finalised. "The proposal is to construct a cremation centre behind the Panki power house," he said.

On the issue of cleanliness drive in the slum areas, he said that the work was being carried out at a rapid pace. "Not only during the day time, but the garbage removal is being carried out during the night time," he said and claimed that sanitary workers are being employed on contract basis to boost the drive. Patni admitted that there had been several stumbling blocks which had affected the development work being carried out in the city. "First there was the election code of conduct, followed by the frequent transfer of senior KNN officials, but now things have stabilised," he said and added, "despite the several hindrances road patch up, streetlight repair and nullah cleaning was carried out by KNN."

In the same breath he did not fail to mention that the encroachment on nullahs was also a major cause behind the slow development.

The mayor claimed that there has been an improvement in the revenue realisation by KNN. "Dues of pensioners, employees and contractors have been largely cleared and only a minimal amount is pending," he said and claimed that best possible efforts are being made to clear the remaining dues.

Patni apprised the media persons that medical facilities at Jageshwar hospital has been improved. "Free of cost medical treatment is being provided to the people with the help of modern medical equipments," he said.
