A story begins...
If you've been plagued with an attack of "Hrithik-itis" too...this page is just what the doctor ordered. Read on to know more about him in the pre-'Kaho Naa...' days.

Early Experiences In The Movie Business...
Light eyes don't work for men in the movies"... "too long a nose"... "too lean a frame"... just some of the comments he bore before re-creating Bollywood history with his smashing debut 'Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai' still running to packed houses across the country. This light-eyed son of light-eyed father Rakesh Roshan has today aroused star mania among Hindi movie buffs like a turbine whipping up cream.
Born in a film family, Hrithik always knew he'd be associated with the movies. The question was how? Shy and unassuming by nature, he hardly appeared "hero"-material and was therefore set to study film production abroad. There was one more reason why he chose not to become an actor. His father had struggled many years trying to make a mark but all efforts were in vain before dad decided to turn to film direction. As luck turned out, it proved to be a good move. Rakesh Roshan saw success with movies like 'Khudgarz', 'Khoon Bhari Maang' and 'Karan Arjun'. Naturally therefore, Hrithik's immediate career option seemed to be in working behind rather than before the camera. He started with assisting his father during the making of 'Koyla'. But despite being the son of a star-director he was subject to no favoritism when with the film unit. So much so that he ate, slept and led the exhausting life that a junior would lead when on an outdoor shoot. Traveling second class, sleeping in cheap motels, eating unit food, being cases in point. But in hindsight, Hrithik, by his own admission, believes the exercise made him tougher and more aware of the grimmer realities in show business.

A Bright Student But...
Despite his involvement with the film profession, Hrithik, unlike the image one associates with a star-child, was an above-average student with a first-class graduate degree in Economics and Commerce. In fact, this was one of the reasons that reinforced the desire to study film production abroad. And he was even close to executing academic plans, to the point where he took his SAT's and filled in university forms, only to realise that it was escapism to ignore the calling of a hidden but very strong desire. The acting bug had bit. And bit hard... especially during the making of 'Koyla'. Juvenile as it may sound to several, Hrithik, after the day's shoot, found himself, on more than one occasion, enacting before the mirror, scenes that hero Shah Rukh performed in the day. He'd decided showbiz was where he wanted to be.

His Launch And What Followed...
What followed were acting classes to polish up an inherent histrionic ability, and a rigorous fitness regimen to cultivate that well-toned physique that's today left many a woman gasping in shock. As Hrithik puts it, "The minute I was confident, Dad was ready to launch me." Like a perfected jigsaw with all pieces well in place, Rakesh Roshan, who had until then been working on the scripting of a love story, was ready to cast for the same. He'd decided on working with a debutante lead pair. Strangely convenient as it may seem, he found one half of it in his backyard. Hrithik was ready for launch. The jigsaw looked complete.
As it has turned out, 'Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai', which was released early in January 2003, turned a spectral flash of light that left Bollywood completely awestruck in the new millennium. Having already broken box-office records set by the last-heralded blockbuster 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai', 'Kaho Naa ...' gave music countdowns newer music to play in the number one slot. Besides it also conferred on debutante heroine, Amisha Patel, the 'Amisha ji' tag, (for the uninitiated, the 'ji' suffix works as linguistic evidence of an actor having attained stardom in Bollywood.) In fact, so dominant was Hrithik's power and pull right after his debut superduper hit, that father-in-law Sanjay Khan worked with the young star himself on creating an official "Hrithik" web site. What's more, some trade pundits went a little overboard, and even predicted the waning of Khan power in Bollywood! With women of all ages swooning over this new hazel-eyed prince, it indeed seemed like India had just welcomed its newest superstar.

The Trying Phase...
Then came the most trying phase in the actor's career. Dazzled by the limelight, Hrithik didn't' know what to make of it. Although known as an actor with his head squarely on his shoulders, junior Roshan went through a period where most of his films flopped badly. Luckily for him, his hard work and perseverance kept the flame alive. Though his films didn't do well, Hrithik himself seldom received a bad review on his performance. Films like 'Fiza', 'Mission Kashmir' and 'Kabhi Khushie Kabhi Gham' buoyed his career graph as an actor but did little to catapult him back into the ionosphere.

The Resurrection...
Until dad Rakesh Roshan decided to take matters into his own Midas hands again. With a novel subject (in the Indian context, at least), a great storyline, and a taut script, the Roshan jadoo was soon back with a bang with another super hit 'Koi Mil Gaya'. The film raked in the moolah in barrelfuls and reinstated the Roshan trio of Rakesh, Rajesh and Hrithiik to their rightful place in the numbers game.

And then came Lakshya , the film which unfortunately didnt do very good at the box office but which showed the world what lies in Hrithik Roshan, the actor . He was appreciated by one and all . His perfomance was flawless and even his harshest critics coudnt find anything but good things to say about his performance.

Rakesh Roshan, Rajesh Roshan, Hrithik Roshan - These three people when together make peoples’ expectations go high (rightfully!) That because with every film that have gone from good to better to being best. So naturally the expectations from their next movie - Krrish - was rightfully very high and as expected, the film broke all box office records (and now as we are writing this article, its making records which would take some years for other films to break!).

Hrithik Roshan now has competition from only one person - Hrithik Roshan. Because no other actor belongs to the class that he has put himself in; his hard work, his determination to better himself, to prove himself again and again can only be challenged by someone like .. Hrithik Roshan!

Personal Quotes

(2000): "I am glad I have the intelligence to understand what is happening to me. If I allow myself to get affected by all this hype, I'll stunt my growth as an actor and be damned for life. I know that I still have a long way to go before I can even aspire to equal the achievements of any of the superstars. I know I am good at my job, and I am sure I will be damn good one day but right now, I also know how bad I can be."

(November 2000): "I have been elevated to such a high status that the fall will be very steep."

(2000, when asked about his fantasy woman): "Gabrielle Anwar. I had a huge crush on her for ever so long. Jessica Rabbit from Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988). I thought she was really hot!"

(December 2002): "After two years of being in films I've realized that I don't need to do movies just for the sake of it. Now I will not do a film unless the role is to die for. It may sound preposterous but I'd also like to do something like 'Spiderman' or 'A Beautiful Mind'. Only such cinema stimulates me. I don't want to do the routine stuff."

(February 2006): My big dream is to take our cinema to a world platform. The idea of acting in a Jackie Chan film doesn't excite me. That's betrayal.

(July 2006): One mistake we always make is to ape the West. We attempt films that we think they will like. The true crossover films are 'Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon' and 'Life Is Beautiful' where the director goes entirely by his conviction, culture, community and conditioning. I am hoping, not just for me and my father and family, but for Indian cinema that Krrish (2006) will succeed, so we can envision an even bigger extravaganza. We want to afford that freedom to take our cinema higher. I believe we are very close now to getting noticed on a world platform.

I was always the pet of my teachers in school probably because I was considered to be very cute. Because of my innocent looks I usually got away with a lot of mischief. I was spoilt and pampered by everyone. All I had to do was sport a lost-boy look and I would have things my way. At home too, if I wasn't given something I wanted, I would simply sit with a long face till I got it.

On his first villain role in Dhoom 2 (2006): "I've played the good guy long enough. Now it's time for me to get seriously evil. I always wanted to play a cool villain. And since the bad guy in Dhoom 2 is multi-dimensional, playing this nightmarish guy is a dream come true."

(December 2006): If someone pretends not to recognize me, then he needs to get a life.

On his infamous kiss with Aishwarya Rai in Dhoom 2 (2006): "I did give it a lot of thought. There was enough reason and inspiration here to go ahead. I tried to make it as beautiful as possible. And I stand by it completely." (April 2007)
